Early 2000’s to 2012: Yusuf Estes Teaches the Aqeedah of the Jahmiyyah

Yusuf Estes spreads the following teachings as he travels to various places all over the world, in clear English, in writings and speeches, in live lectures and recorded broadcasts on various TV channels and websites:

  • The Quran is not a book.
  • The Quran is not Quran in written form.
  • The Quran is only considered “real Quran” in recitation form.
  • The mus-haf is not the Quran.
  • The mus-haf only represents the Quran.
  • The Quran is only written in the Preserved Tablet.
  • The Quran is similar to paper money.
  • The Quran is similar to Christian hymnals (sheet music).
  • Allah “recited” the Quran to the Angel Gabriel.
  • Other statements found on this website and in the PDF: Yusuf Estes and the Quran.

  1. Salam alaycom, can you please tell me what ia wrong with yusuf estes saying the Quran is not a book? What is the meaning of the word Quran?

    • wa ‘alaykas-salaamu Ali, and thank you for visiting and asking your important question.

The problem with saying that the Quran is not a book is that you must reject many, many Quranic Verses to do so, since Allah has described the Quran as a book clearly in dozens (if not hundreds) of Quranic Verses. A few quick examples: Al-Baqarah (Ch.2): verse #2, 129, 151, Aal ‘Imran (3):3, 7, etc… For someone to say the Quran is NOT a Book after Allaah refers to it as a Book is clear disbelief in the Quran, and anyone who rejects one Verse of the Quran cannot be considered a Muslim. So this is what is wrong with saying the Quran is not a book.

Regarding the meaning of the word “Quran” in the Arabic Language, then the scholars have at least four opinions about its origin:

[1] It is special name just for the Book of Allaah (like Torah and Injeel), not taken from any verbal base.
[2] It is a verbal noun from qa-ra-ah (recitation).
[3] It is taken from the verb qa-ra-na (combining).
[4] It is taken from al-qur’ (compilation).

To select the second meaning without any evidence, and then conclude that the Quran is ONLY recitation and NOT a book, in direct contradiction to the One whose Speech it is (!), is compound ignorance, so be warned of ignorant people playing games with the upright Religion of Allaah and the pure ‘aqeedah of the Muslims. I hope this helps.
